Canvas patterns in the wetland of Chalastra viewd from above

The morphology of the soil in the Chalastra wetland as we approach the Axios River Delta looks like handiwork when viewed from above.

Greek mythology says that wetlands were inhabited by the Gods. This is the reason why in most of them archaeological ruins have been found. In all religions the concept of divinity is directly linked to the creation of life. And water is life.

Wetlands have the ability to utilize the raw materials of the environment and transform them into organic components, that are essential for the food chain. They are filtering rainwater which after passing through them, ends up in the sea free of useless and dangerous substances. They contain the momentum of water, thus protecting plantages from flooding. They are temperature regulators, helping to avoid extreme weather phenomena. All these characteristics make them an ideal environment for the development of agriculture and livestock farming, but also for the survival of rare and sensitive species of flora and fauna.

In recent years, uncontrolled human intervention has increasingly degraded the ecological value of wetlands. It is time to understand, that their protection is not just the obsession of some crazy activists, but is mainly a matter of survival for everyone on earth.
