Abandoned Panteleimon tunnel in Pieria

| This is a summary of the complete article |

I have also passed over these rails. Since I was a student, until the year that the new high-speed trains entered the route. This was one of the most beautiful parts of the journy.

It was the point where the mood changed dramatically, when the endless and tough mountain landscape was replaced by the shore and the feeling that we were finally approaching Thessaloniki.

The site of the abandoned tunnel is today considered as a cultural monument and one of the most characteristic samples of modern industrial architecture. It is essentially the first open northern section of the old railway line immediately after Platamonas station.

The train was traveling for a while right next to the people who were enjoying their daily swim into the sea.

We walk through the tunnel and step on the metal sleepers. We can still see the logo of the manufacturing company and the date pressed on them. It is not so long, just 51 meters. However, the slight bend in the middle creates the feeling that we are in seperate dimension, since neither in front nor behind you, can see any external light.

The place has a special aura that takes us back in time. The blackened walls by the steam and diesel locomotives of that era, the iron rails on which we try to balance, the thick gravel. We can almost hear the sound of the train approaching the tunnel.
